Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: GLAAD is cool with their engagement
April 13, 2012 | 5:29 pm
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may have confirmed their engagement to live as man and wife, but that Friday announcement isn’t the only one the famous duo has made regarding the institution of marriage.
In 2006, a year or so into their relationship, Pitt declared that he and Jolie wouldn’t tie the knot until all Americans had the equal right to do so, garnering the leading man huge support from the gay community.
We were reminded of this during his recent awards tour for “Moneyball,” as Pitt spoke freely about his and Angie’s children encouraging them to get hitched. That stirred some anxiety from the gay community, but what’s the vibe now that the engagement is official?
“We congratulate them on their engagement and thank them for continuing to speak out about the inequality that so many gay and lesbian couples face today,” GLAAD spokesman RICH FERRARO told the Ministry in an email.
“No loving and committed couple should be denied the happiness, joy, and legal protections that come with marriage.”
GLAAD’s seal of approval certainly clears a political path for the pair to wed (though we can’t imagine when, with their massive brood and work schedules), and let’s be honest — we’d hardly try to buy a dress, plan a menu or decorate nary a French chateau without that thumbs-up either.
